With review fraud costing UK consumers millions each year, knowing how to identify manipulated ratings has never been more important. Here's what to look for.

The Problem with Fake Reviews

Online reviews have become the single biggest driver of UK consumer purchasing decisions — yet the review ecosystem is riddled with manipulation. From paid five-star ratings to orchestrated negative campaigns against competitors, the fake review industry is worth an estimated £2 billion globally.

Knowing how to separate genuine feedback from manufactured noise isn't just useful — it's increasingly essential.

Red Flags to Watch For

Vague, generic language. Authentic reviews tend to be specific. They mention the customer's actual situation, the specific product or service, and the outcome. Fake reviews often read like generic templates: "Great service, highly recommend!" tells you almost nothing.

A sudden spike of reviews. Check the review history timeline if the platform shows it. A business that accumulates 40 five-star reviews in a single week after months of silence has almost certainly purchased them.

Reviewer profiles with no history. On many platforms, you can click through to a reviewer's profile. If they've reviewed only one business — the one you're researching — treat it with caution. Genuine reviewers typically leave feedback across multiple businesses over time.

Overly formal or marketing-style language. Real customers don't write like PR agents. If a review reads like a press release, it probably was.

Only extremes — no middling opinions. A rating distribution that shows only 5-star and 1-star reviews, with nothing in the 2–4 range, often indicates manipulation from both directions: bought positives and planted negatives from competitors.

What Good Review Platforms Do

The most trustworthy review platforms:

  • Verify the transaction — requiring proof that the reviewer actually used the business
  • Enforce identity verification — preventing anonymous accounts from gaming the system
  • Use video — fabricating a genuine on-camera testimonial is significantly harder than typing a few sentences
  • Show reviewer history — allowing you to contextualise each piece of feedback

At Trust Dan, every review is linked to a verified UK consumer account. Our video review format makes manipulation exponentially more difficult: you simply cannot fake someone sitting on camera sharing a genuine experience.

The Bottom Line

No review platform is immune to manipulation, but some are far more resistant than others. When doing your research:

  • Weight video reviews more heavily than text
  • Look for specificity and personal context
  • Cross-reference across multiple platforms where possible
  • Be especially sceptical of businesses with suspiciously uniform high scores

Reviews are most powerful when they're honest — and platforms that protect their integrity protect you.
